OpenAI restructures into public-benefit firm, Microsoft takes 27% stake
Microsoft and OpenAI have reached a deal to allow the ChatGPT maker to restructure itself into a public-benefit corporation, valuing OpenAI at $500bn and giving it more freedom in its business operations. The deal, unveiled on Tuesday, removes a major constraint on raising capital for OpenAI that has existed since 2019. As its ChatGPT service exploded in popularity, those limitations had become a notable source of tension between the two companies. Microsoft will still hold a stake of about $135bn, or 27 percent, in OpenAI Group PBC, which will be controlled by the OpenAI Foundation, a nonprofit, the companies said. Microsoft, based in Redmond, Washington in the United States, has invested $13.8bn in OpenAI, with Tuesday's deal implying that the firm had generated a return of nearly 10 times its investment.

Alan Turing institute launches new mission to protect UK from cyber-attacks
A glitch at its cloud computing service brought down apps and websites around the world earlier this month. A glitch at its cloud computing service brought down apps and websites around the world earlier this month. Tue 28 Oct 2025 09.29 EDTLast modified on Tue 28 Oct 2025 10.26 EDT Britainâ s leading AI institute has announced a new mission to help protect the nation from cyber-attacks on infrastructure, including energy, transport and utilities, after it was embroiled in allegations of toxic work culture and the chief executive resigned amid ministerial pressure. The Alan Turing Institute will â carry out a programme of science and innovation designed to protect the UK from hostile threatsâ, it announced on Tuesday as part of changes following the resignation last month of Jean Innes, its chief executive, after a staff revolt and government calls for a strategic overhaul of the state-funded body. The mission comes amid growing concern over Britainâ s vulnerability to internet outages and cyber-attacks after this monthâ s incident affecting Amazonâ s cloud computing globally and recent cyber-attacks crippling production at Jaguar Land Rover factories, and supply chains at Marks & Spencer and the Co-op.

Microsoft faces growing unrest over role in Israel's war on Gaza: 'Close to a tipping point'
For the second time in the last month, Microsoft employees disrupted high-level executives speaking at an event celebrating the company's 50th anniversary on 4 April, in protest against the company's role in Israel's ongoing siege on Gaza. The two were fired within days. The Microsoft president Brad Smith and the former CEO Steve Ballmer were shouted down at Seattle's Great Hall on 20 March by a current and former employee. The April event was preceded by a rally outside that also included current and former employees of the tech giant. Protesters projected a sign onto the hall's wall saying, "Microsoft powers genocide" – a reference to Israel's extensive use of the company's AI and cloud computing services since 7 October 2023, as "the IDF's insatiable demand for bombs was matched by its need for greater access to cloud computing services," the Guardian reported.

How US Big Tech supports Israel's AI-powered genocide and apartheid
Shortly after the October 7 attacks on Israel, Google CEO Sundar Pichai issued a statement on social media, extending sympathy to Israelis without mentioning the Palestinians. Other tech executives – including from Meta, Amazon, Microsoft and IBM – offered their gushing support for Israel as well. Since then, they have remained largely silent as the Israeli army has massacred close to 35,000 Palestinians, including more than 14,500 children, destroyed hundreds of schools and all universities and devastated Palestinian homes, healthcare infrastructure, mosques and heritage sites. To execute this shocking level of destruction, the Israeli military has been assisted by artificial intelligence (AI) programs designed to produce targets with little human oversight. It is not clear to what extent foreign tech giants are directly involved in these projects, but we can say with certainty that they supply much of the core infrastructure required to build them, including advanced computer chips, software and cloud computing. Amid this AI-assisted genocide, Big Tech in the United States is quietly continuing business as usual with Israel.

Microsoft's heavy bet on AI pays off as it beats expectations in second quarter
Profits at Microsoft beat Wall Street's expectations as its heavy bet on artificial intelligence continued to bear fruit in the second quarter. The technology giant has invested billions of dollars into AI in a bid to turbocharge its growth, particularly of its cloud computing services. Its cloud computing revenue surged by more than 20% in the latest quarter. Microsoft's AI tools "are orchestrating a new era of AI transformation, driving better business outcomes across every role and industry," said Satya Nadella, the chief executive of Microsoft. As the group races to integrate AI across its software and services, Nadella said its Azure cloud computing business saw the pace of deals worth 100m and 10m increase by double-digit percentages.

Personalized Emotion Detection using IoT and Machine Learning
Jothiraj, Fiona Victoria Stanley, Mashhadi, Afra
The Medical Internet of Things, a recent technological advancement in medicine, is incredibly helpful in providing real-time monitoring of health metrics. This paper presents a non-invasive IoT system that tracks patients' emotions, especially those with an autism spectrum disorder. With a few affordable sensors and cloud computing services, the individual's heart rates are monitored and analyzed to study the effects of change in sweat and heartbeats per minute for different emotions. Under normal resting conditions of the individual, the proposed system could detect the right emotion using machine learning algorithms with a performance of up to 92% accuracy. The result of the proposed approach is comparable with the state-of-the-art solutions in medical IoT.

'Quantum Internet' Inches Closer With Advance In Data Teleportation - AI Summary
Researchers believe these devices could one day speed the creation of new medicines, power advances in artificial intelligence and summarily crack the encryption that protects computers vital to national security. In 2019, Google announced that its machine had reached what scientists call "quantum supremacy," which meant it could perform an experimental task that was impossible with traditional computers. Part of the challenge is that a qubit breaks, or "decoheres," if you read information from it -- it becomes an ordinary bit capable of holding only a 0 or a 1 but not both. But by stringing many qubits together and developing ways of guarding against decoherence, scientists hope to build machines that are both powerful and practical. Ultimately, ideally, these would be joined into networks that can send information between nodes, allowing them to be used from anywhere, much as cloud computing services from the likes of Google and Amazon make processing power widely accessible today.

Microsoft has completed its acquisition of Siri backend creator Nuance in a bumper deal that it says will usher in a "new era of outcomes-based AI". "Completion of this significant and strategic acquisition brings together Nuance's best-in-class conversational AI and ambient intelligence with Microsoft's secure and trusted industry cloud offerings," said Scott Guthrie, Executive Vice President of the Cloud AI Group at Microsoft. "This powerful combination will help providers offer more affordable, effective, and accessible healthcare, and help organisations in every industry create more personalised and meaningful customer experiences. I couldn't be more pleased to welcome the Nuance team to our Microsoft family." Nuance became a household name (in techie households, anyway) for creating the speech recognition engine that powers Apple's smart assistant, Siri. However, Nuance has been in the speech recognition business since 2001 when it was known as ScanSoft.
